I compiled and edited this bilingual community recipe book – Taste of Maindee. The book features recipes from some of the very many ethnic groups who’ve made their home in Maindee, Newport.

The Project

Create, author a recipe book based on the residents in the Maindee Community, illustrating the diverse cultures and food within this book

Key Objectives

  • Explore shared cultural heritage
  • Restore natural heritage , enhancing biodiversity and improving access More resilient community
  • Acknowledge the support of Welsh Government and the Natural Lottery Heritage Fund  funding  on any sites, social media content and hard copy publications in English and Welsh
  • Build on the community engagement initiated during the previous project and network with local groups and services
  • Share and celebrate individual’s cultural heritage and restore green elements to local areas
  • Deliver a series of workshops which will enable participants to develop and use relevant skills to improve their physical environment and find out more about green solutions and climate change impact.

I Got Involved Because

  • The Project interest me it was creative sustainable and would have community impact
  • I am a creative freelance Practitioner & Facilitator with a versatile art disciplinary, working across different communities that I have a strong rapport and sense of belonging with over the years.
  • My aim is to bridge art and community through my practice to create a sense of community, belonging and understanding.
  • I am aware of cultural sensitivities within the arts in different communities which makes my approach to curating and facilitating workshops bespoke with careful thought and planning

What I Delivered

I had the task of Project managing the publishing of a recipe book A Taste of Maindee consisting of stories and recipes from residents in Maindee- the following is the process and result.

  • A successful high quality recipe book, consisting of stories, poetry photography recipes and art work.
  • A successful community Book launch – that consisted of heritage, diverse food, chef demo, poetry readings, an exhibition and diverse community organisations and people.
  • Recognised by the welsh government & National Heritage fund as the best framework they had ever seen and will now be used as an example framework.
  • Proof copy read, compiled and edited completed book
  • Working in partnership with creative professionals.
  • Delivering & facilitating engaging and nature inspired creative art workshops in a range of communities.
  • Working with partnership organisations Maindee School, Gwent, Community house Eton road, National literacy trust, Women of Newport, Girl Guides, and Maindee Library.
